  DRESSINGS

There will be dressings covering the incisions and the generator site.  Keep these dressings dry.  Do not take baths until after your first postoperative follow-up visit.  You may shower after 4 days.  Cover your incision with plastic wrap during the shower.

You can remove the dressings 2 days after your surgery.  The steri-strips should be left in place.

You may need to wear an abdominal binder for 4-6 weeks.  This helps reduce swelling around the generator and increases comfort.  This can be removed during rest and while bathing or showering.

POST-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS

RESTRICTIONS

It is important to follow these restrictions for 8 weeks after your surgery to prevent lead movement:
     -  Position bed to maintain body alignment; sleep on your back and side whenever
        possible
     -  Avoid overhead reaching whenever possible.
     -  Avoid vigorous bending and rotating.
     -  Do not lift items weighing more than 5 pounds.
     -  Security systems such as those found in libraries, department stores and airports
        have the potential to turn your stimulation system on or off.  Please be aware
        of this when passing through any of these security systems.  You will be given an ID
        from your spinal cord stimulation representative indicating that you have an
        implanted medical device
     -  Stimulation can increase or decrease with changes in body position.  This is normal
        and does not mean there is anything wrong.
     -  The stimulator should be turned off while driving to reduce risks during sudden
        sensation changes.  It is recommended to have someone else drive you whenever
        possible.
     -  Some medical procedures can damage or cause change to the neurostimulation
        system.  Consult with your doctor about the risks of the following procedures:

            *  Electrocautery – surgery using electrical methods
            *  Diathermy – heat treatment
            *  Lithotripsy – treatment of kidney stones
            *  Radiation therapy
            *  MRI – not recommended
            *  Defibrillation – electric shock to the heart
            *  Spine manipulations by a chiropractor can move the internal leads

SYMPTOMS TO REPORT:

    -  Rash, itching, or drainage at the incision site
    -  Poor pain control
    -  Chills or fever greater than 100.6 F
    -  Unexplained neck stiffness or severe headaches
