| WHAT IS A CAUDAL BLOCK? A caudal injection is an injection of medication into the lower portion of the epidural space of the spine in order to relieve pain. HOW DOES A CAUDAL BLOCK ALLEVIATE MY PAIN? An injury or disease in any of the structures of the spine may result in inflammation. The inflammation can apply pressure to the surrounding nerves, resulting in pain. Caudal injections are given in an attempt to reduce this inflammation and pain. Injections of this nature are done in situations where it may be difficult to perform traditional epidural injections, such as for patients with previous back surgery or a narrowing of the spinal canal. The local anesthetic provides immediate pain relief by numbing the area of the injection. The numbing effect will typically wear off in 4–6 hours. The steroid provides pain relief by reducing the inflammation in the area of the injection. The steroid can take 2–10 days to begin working. A series of injections may be needed to provide the desired pain relief.POST PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS ACTIVITY: - Do not drive or operate machinery on the day of your procedure DIET: PATIENT COMFORT: - Keep the injection site clean and dry.
